Chicken Invaders 3 : Revenge of the Yolk

Introduction

Chickens.
For centuries we have oppressed them, grilling, roasting, stewing, broiling, and stuffing them in buns. We should have known the time would come for us to pay. And it did.
Intergalactic chickens invaded Earth, seeking revenge for the oppression of their earthly brethren. They came out of nowhere, and everywhere. It was only you who managed to repel the invasion, and saved humanity from an eternity of servitude.
Then, things got serious. The intergalactic chickens assaulted the solar system and tried make sure that every planet was inhabited exclusively by chickens. Yet again, it was you who took the world's fate in your ketchup-stained hands and saved the day.
But it isn't over yet. Once more, it's time to don your teflon-coated, egg-repulsing helmet and fight for our ancestral right to omelettes. Only you can make a difference. Will you succeed? Will the future of chicken burgers be secure? Or will you end up as part of the menu in a galactic chicken restaurant?

Playing the Game

The basic game mechanics are very simple:
  1. Clear each wave by destroying chickens and other appearing enemies.
  2. Avoid falling eggs and other enemy projectiles.
  3. Collect gifts and powerups to upgrade your spaceship weapons.
  4. Collect falling food items to earn missiles.
That's it! It may sound simple but (as you'll soon discover) simple things aren't always easy! Those chickens have got a few tricks up their proverbial sleeves that will keep your hands full from the very beginning. Good luck!

The Game Screen

Most of what you see while playing the game proper is taken up by a view of your fight against the chickens. Along the edges of the screen you'll also be able to find useful information about the game status:
Score area (top-left)
This area displays your score. The heat level of your current weapon is also shown next to your score.
Status area (bottom-left)
This area displays a series of informative icons related to your status. From left to right, these are: your remaining lives (heart icon), your remaining missiles (rocket icon), your current weapon level (lightning icon), and collected food items (drumstick icon).
Network area (top-right)
This area shows information about the status of all players currently playing. Various pieces of information are cycled periodically. This area is only displayed in multiplayer games.
System area (bottom-right)
This area displays system messages. The last message is displayed highlighted, along with the previous 3 messages. When there are no new messages to display, this area will slowly disappear.

Options
Game options can be accessed by clicking on the "Options" button from the main menu. Options are organized in the following categories.

Gameplay
In-game help
Displays tutorial, help messages, and tips while you play.

Allow cheats
Enables the in-game cheat keys. This option is only available in the registered version.

Controls
Controls can be re-defined in this menu. The default controls are as follows:
Arrow keys or mouse movement
Fly around.
SPACE or left mouse button
Fire.
ENTER or right mouse button
Launch missile.
ESC or PAUSE key
Brings up the in-game pause menu.
Ctrl-X
Use this key combination to immediately quit while you're in a game.
You can also set the keyboard sensitivity here, which controls how fast your keyboard/joystick/gamepad reacts to button presses. Low values will cause your spaceship to move more smoothly, while high values will allow for rapid changes in direction. Experiment with different settings until you find the one you're most comfortable with.

Graphics

Detail (fastest setting: Low, best setting: High)
Controls the overall level of graphical detail and special effects in the game. Set this to "low" if the game runs slowly on your computer.

In addition to the detail setting, there are more options that you can tweak to maximize the game's performance (you can also visit the website for an in-depth guide on how to run the game as fast as possible). These can be found in the "Advanced" area:

Video Mode (fastest setting: 640x480, recommended setting: 800x600)
Selects the game resolution. The game's native resolution is 800x600 (all the graphics have been optimized for this resolution) and setting the resolution higher may make the game run a lot slower. However, higher resolutions will allow more details to be clearly seen. If your hardware does not support the requested resolution, it will just be ignored.
Full Screen (fastest: On, recommended setting: On)
Selects whether the game will run in full screen (recommended), or in a window on your desktop. Some graphics cards run much faster when in full-screen, while others run better when windowed. Experiment!
V-Sync (fastest setting: Off, recommended setting: Off)
Selects whether each frame will be synchronized with your monitors vertical refresh signal. Setting this option on will make the frames smoother, but will limit your maximum frame rate (typically to 60 or 75 frames per second). Turn it off to make the game run faster.
Maximum fps (fastest setting: 400, recommended setting: 100)
This puts a limit to the maximum frames per second (fps) of the game. There is generally no need to lower this from the default setting unless you want to free up processor time for other tasks running in the background. In any case, it's not recommended that you set this below 40 fps. Setting it too high will result in an uneven frame rate and may cause your sound output to stutter on some configurations.
Bilinear Filter (fastest setting: Off, recommended setting: On)
This turns bilinear filtering on or off. Bilinear filtering significantly improves the smoothness of graphics, however it does slow things down on older computers. It's only recommended to turn this off if you are running the game on a very slow computer.
Show fps
Enabling this option will show your current frames-per-second (fps) at the top-right of the screen.

Sound

Quality (fastest setting: Low, recommended setting: High)
There is normally no need to change this from the default "high" setting. Try setting it to "low" on very slow computers, and only after you have tweaked your graphics settings first. You can also set it to "very high", although the difference in quality will be negligible. This option requires quitting the game and restarting it before it takes effect.
In-game music
Turn this on to have music play while you're playing the game. Note that turning this off will still play music during the introduction and while in the menu.
Sound volume
Controls the sound effects volume.
Music volume
Controls the music volume.

Bonus Guide

Bonuses come in a variety of different flavours, and they briefly appear underneath the score area whenever they are awarded.

Charity
Awarded at the start of later waves to improve your weapon's power level if it's very low.
Clean Sweep
Awarded when all the enemies in a wave have been destroyed (that is, if no chickens managed to escape without being killed).
Early Bird
Awarded if a chicken is killed within 3 seconds of starting a new wave.
Extra Life
An additional life is awarded every 1,000,000 points (for "rookie" only, other difficulty modes have proportionately higher point thresholds).
Extra Missile
Awarded whenever enough food has been collected to obtain a missile.
Firepower
Awarded every time a weapon powerup is collected.
Max Power
Awarded when the 'secret' weapon power level is attained. This can be achieved by collecting 10 additional powerups beyond the maximum normal power level (that is, 20 powerups in total).
Multi-Kill
Awarded every time a group of chickens are killed together (no more than 1-second separation between kills).
Pecking Order
In certain levels, chickens appear organized in groups. This bonus is awarded whenever the chickens in each group are destroyed in the same order they appeared on the screen.
Super Size Me
Awarded every time a "quad chicken-burger with extra cheese and 3 olives" is collected.
Weapon Switch
This bonus is awarded whenever a weapon switch bonus (gift box) is collected. The name of the weapon will appear in place of the bonus name.
Weapons Guide
Your ship is equipped with a multi-purpose gun emplacement that can accept seven different types of weapons:
Ion Blaster
Good all-purpose weapon with a fast re-fire rate and accelerating projectiles. Its main advantage is that it spreads out at higher power levels, allowing your ship to cover a wider area. However, it's difficult to deliver concentrated firepower with the ion blaster unless you get really close to the enemy.
Neutron Gun
More powerful than the Ion Blaster, this weapon can deliver more damage than other weapons, especially at high power levels. Primarily forward-facing, its main disadvantages are the average projectile speed and a slow re-fire rate.
Laser Cannon
Fires lightning-fast bolts of focused energy, instantly barbecuing any chickens that cross its path. It is recommended to fire this weapon manually make up for its reduced power. Another limitation is that the laser cannon can only shoot directly forward, although there is some spread available in higher power levels.
Vulcan Chaingun
The Vulcan Chaingun fires multiple ultra-fast metal shards at an extremely fast rate. Unfortunately, each shard does minimal damage, but concentrated fire will quickly tear through anything in its path. Watch out for overheating with this weapon, as manual fire won't help you much here.
Lightning Frier
Now things are getting interesting. An experimental weapon from the Deep Fried Chicken labs, the Lightning Frier can deliver 1.21 gigawatts of pure energy directly to the nearest unfortunate foe. In higher power levels, multiple targets can be tracked independently. Throw auto-locking and a slow heating rate in the mix, and you've got yourself a "sure-fire" (ahem) hit.
Plasma Rifle
This is the Lightning Frier's military-issue brother. It can deliver enormous amounts of damage to a single target at a time, and with an even wider range of auto-lock. Unfortunately, this weapon also generates heat rapidly, and frugal use is necessary in order to avoid overheating.
Utensil Poker
This is a highly experimental weapon, designed specifically for use against the chicken invaders. Just try it and see!
When fired, each weapon generates heat (different weapons generate different amounts of heat when fired). If you fire continuously, your weapon will eventually overheat. Overheating will temporarily disable further firing until the temperature falls back to normal operating levels.
You can change the weapon type by collecting the differently coloured gifts that sometimes drop down when a chicken is killed. If you collect a present for the same weapon type you are already using, then your weapon is powered up instead. Unfortunately, when you die, your firepower is halved (there is an exception to this, be observant!).
Your weapon power can be increased by collecting atomic powerups. There are 11 normal levels of power. A 12th 'secret' power level is given when 21 atomic powerups are collected (10 beyond the normal limit), but remember that you lose some of them every time you die.
Your ship is additionally equipped with a missile launcher. Missiles are automatically guided to the center of the screen, where they explode damaging all enemies. An all-powerful weapon, it can equally be used for offensive or defensive purposes, as the blast also destroys all enemy projectiles. However, note that using a missile causes certain bonuses to be disabled. Your ship does not carry any missiles to begin with. You gain one missile every time you collect enough of the food items that drop down as chickens are killed.

Items guide

As enemies are killed, they sometimes drop food items or other special items. Apart from adding to your score, these items generally improve your chances of staying alive, so collect them every chance you get.
Red gift
Selects the "Ion Blaster" weapon.
Green gift
Selects the "Neutron Gun" weapon.
Yellow/orange gift
Selects the "Laser Cannon" weapon.
Blue gift
Selects the "Vulcan Chaingun " weapon.
Cyan/white gift
Selects the "Lightning Frier " weapon.
Purple gift
Selects the "Plasma Rifle" weapon.
Gray gift
Selects the "Utensil Poker " weapon.
Atomic Powerup
Increases the power of your current weapon by 1 unit.
Coins
These come in 3 types (bronze, silver, gold) and boost your score so make sure you collect as many as you can!
Chicken leg
Collect chicken legs and other food items to gain missiles. A missile is awarded when 50 food items have been collected.
Single Chicken Burger
It comes in four variations (plain, cheese, cheese/tomato, cheese/tomato/lettuce/olive), and it always gives 1 food unit.
Double Chicken Burger (with olive)
Worth 3 food units.
Treble Chicken Burger (with 2 olives)
Worth 4 food units.
Quad Chicken Burger (with 3 olives and extra cheese)
Worth 5 food units, and the "Super Size Me" bonus.
Roast Chicken
Gives a whopping 10 food units (not to mention a full stomach!).

Medals Guide

Medals are awarded only for solo missions, and they can be browsed by selecting the "Career Medals" menu.
Medal of Annihilation
Awarded for performing a multikill of 30 or more enemies in a single wave. If you use a missile, you forfeit this bonus for the entire wave.
Distinguished Green Greed Cross
Awarded for 90% coin collection in a single wave. To easily obtain this medal during Bonus Challenge waves, don't fire indiscriminately. Destroy a single target at a time, and concentrate on collecting the dropped coins. The usual tactic of firing blindly and moving left-right along the bottom of the screen won't work here.
Meritorious Marksmanship Award
Awarded for 90% shot accuracy in a single wave. Auto-locking weapons greatly help in getting this award (try to avoid spreading weapons like the Ion Blaster).
Medal of Great Appetite Achievement
Awarded for 90% food collection in a single wave. Easy to achieve when you're going for it. Remember that you have multiple opportunities to collect food because it bounces off the edges of the screen.
Chicken Hunter Medal of Excellence
Awarded for 90% kill ratio in a single star system. Not too hard to achieve if you're careful. Pay particular attention to waves in which chickens can escape if you take too long to destroy them.
Order of the Teflon Certificate of Merit
Awarded for no deaths in a single star system. This medal will eventually come on its own as your experience and skill grow.
Recognition Medal of Self-Restraint
Awarded for not using any missiles in a single star system. An easy medal, especially in the earlier star systems.
Honourable "Either Brave or Stupid" Achievement Award
Awarded for not using any power-ups in a single star system. An extremely rare medal, simply because it's impossible to get unless you're expressly aiming for it. Forget about gaining it in the very first star system. Use the first couple of star systems to power up your weapon as much as possible, then go for the medal in the third star system.
Superior Budget Thriftiness Commendation Medal
Awarded for completing an entire mission without using any missiles. A very hard medal, but still attainable if you're careful.
Greatest Chicken Hunter of All Time Award
Awarded for completing an entire mission without dying once. Another very hard medal. Make sure you select "rookie" difficulty when going for this one.
Rookie Hero Campaign Trophy
Awarded for completing a mission on the "rookie" difficulty level. Simply finish the game and this medal is automatically yours.
Veteran Chicken Hunter Campaign Trophy
Awarded for completing a mission on the "veteran" difficulty level. Harder than the "rookie" one, naturally, but also given automatically.
"I Eat Chickens for Breakfast" Campaign Trophy
Awarded for completing a mission on the "Superstar Hero" difficulty level. Hardest of all the trophies.

Unlockables Guide

Unlockables are features that are... well... locked until you unlock them. You can unlock them by finishing the game. "Rookie" can only unlock three of them, you'll need to play on "veteran" to unlock the rest (each time you gain a "veteran" unlockable, you'll get the corresponding "rookie" unlockable for free). After being unlocked, you still need to enable unlockables from the "Career Unlockables" menu before they have any effect. Unlockables, like medals, are only available in solo missions.
Superstar hero difficulty
Does exactly what it says on the tin. It allows selection of the most difficult setting when you're starting a new game. In this mode, chicken are 3 times tougher, but you can also gain 9 times the score of the "rookie" level!
Damage indicator
Shows exactly how much damage is inflicted to your enemies (red numbers). You can use this unlockable to understand which weapons are effective against which enemies, and to fine-tune your strategies.
Points indicator
Shows points awarded to player (green numbers).
Progress indicator
Turns on the % progress indication (that is normally only shows on boss waves) for all waves. This counter shows the % of enemies actually destroyed, so it's possible for a wave to end without the indicator reaching 100% if you've let some chickens escape.
Secret weapon
Enables the appearance of the super-secret "Utensil Poker" weapon. Note that this weapon will appear in the final wave of the game regardless of this setting.
Super-secret mine bombs
When this unlockable is enabled, you will fire super-secret mine bombs instead of the regular missiles. Mines have a built-in detonation delay of 1 second regardless of your position on the screen, and they make for an interesting change in strategy.
Clupea harengus (red)
Nobody knows what this ultra-hyper-super-secret device can do. If you do find out, please let us know, because we've forgotten!

Boss Enemy Guide

Before you can completely clear out a star system you'll come up against a "boss" enemy. They are much tougher than your regular clucking chicken, and you'll need all your might (and also cunning) in order to defeat them. Oh, and reading this guide couldn't hurt either.
U.C.O.
— When the U.C.O. first appears, it's possible that it flies so low you'll crash into its tentacles. To avoid this, move to the far left/right side of the screen. Still, if you get caught unprepared, try to stay directly below the U.C.O., because its tentacles will spread out and give you room to navigate.
— The U.C.O. always fires in a specific pattern. Study it and wait for your opportunity!
— The U.C.O.'s fire tracks your spaceship. Don't move wildly across the screen in order to avoid it, because you'll quickly run out of space as new incoming projectiles will quickly spread all over the screen. Instead, move aside in a controlled manner, just enough so that you won't get hit.
— The U.C.O. is harmless while it's moving (unless you crash into its tentacles). Use this time to deliver as much damage as possible, because once it settles down and prepares to fire, you'll need to take defensive measures.
— You can fly over the part of the tentacle that connects the gun to the main body of the U.C.O., if you're feeling brave enough!

Mother-Hen Ship
— The Mother-Hen Ship will stop moving just before it (she?) fires. Watch for it and get out of the way!
— Use the firing sound as a warning sign. This will give you about half a second more reaction time than by waiting until you actually see the projectiles.
— The further away you are from the Mother-Hen Ship when it fires, the safer you are, as this gives you more time to react. You'll need to get close if you want to inflict any damage, however.
— The Mother-Hen Ship will fire more projectiles as it gets progressively more damaged, so be prepared.
Boss Chicken
— The most dangerous place you can be is immediately below the Boss Chicken, because eggs fall straight down (and with very little warning).
— If the Boss Chicken flies too low, be patient and wait in a corner of the screen until it flies back up. Don't try to squeeze in a few more shots, that's only asking for trouble as you won't have enough time to react to the eggs.
Strip-teasing Boss
— Unlike the Boss Chicken, this boss's fire is roughly periodic, so you're safe for a couple of seconds after each fire. It's not strictly periodic, so don't get too cocky.
— Eggs are fired around the entire 360 degrees, so don't assume you're safe if you're above the boss. "Far away" is a far better strategy.
— If you're careful, you'll be able to listen to when the boss fires. This will give you slightly more time to react (since eggs travel slowly and won't appear for another half-second or so).
Mysterious Ship
— A very tough opponent, but easy once you know how to handle it.
— The Mysterious Ship may spin, but it always fires straight down, and its fire is strictly periodic.
— Keep track of the time between shots and make sure you are not directly above/below/left/right as the Mysterious Ship is about to fire.
— When the ship is firing, the safest places to be are the northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest quadrants of the Mysterious Ship, and as close to it as possible. Don't move too far away, because the beams taper out and cover a wider area further out.
— If the Mysterious Ship flies too low, move to one of the upper quadrants immediately, and be patient until it flies back up.
The Yolk-Star™
— The energy beam cannons cannot be damaged. Concentrate your fire on the main shell.
— If you have an auto-locking weapon, moving closer to the Yolk-Star™ will help to lock on the correct target.
— Watch the progress bar and get ready for the terminator chickens when it hits 100%. The best strategy is to simply use missiles to get rid of them.
— If you're out of missiles, stay near the top while the chickens fly in, then slowly slide downwards while continuously firing to destroy them.
— Along with the chickens, the Yolk-Star™ will also drop bonuses. Grabbing these bonuses is normally very dangerous as you'll have to negotiate both the beams and the approaching chickens, but it can be done. In any case, don't get too greedy. Forget about the bonuses if you can't get to them. A lost life will set you back a lot more than a single bonus can help.
— The safest place to be is actually near the surface of the Yolk-Star™, as the beams (like all beams) taper out with distance.
— In the second stage, simply move out of the way and inflict as much damage as you can when the opportunity arises. It's fairly straightforward provided that you don't try to rush things.

Hints & tips

Having a little trouble handling those chickens? The following hints & tips will help you get the upper hand:
  1. Tap the fire button for single shots, or hold it down for continuous (automatic) fire.
  2. Automatic fire overheats faster than firing each shot manually. This is particularly important to remember for weapons that overheat quickly, such as the Plasma Rifle.
  3. Automatic fire is also slow with certain weapons (especially the Neutron Gun and the Laser Cannon). In these cases, manual fire is much faster.
  4. Bosses have strengths or weaknesses against particular weapons. If a particular weapon doesn't seem to be effective, try another one next time.
  5. In waves where chickens appear in groups (like "Chicken Geometry"), a new group will appear to take the place of an existing group that has been completely destroyed. Put differently, if even a single chicken remains from the existing group, the new group won't appear. Do not destroy all groups at the same time. Spread them out instead by leaving one or two chickens alone. This will even out the appearance of new groups and make it easier for you to tackle them individually.
  6. Keep moving (especially at higher levels) to shake off chickens that attack your current position or lock on and relentlessly pursue you.
  7. Keep your distance from chickens. The farther away you are, the more time you have to react to incoming eggs.
  8. Minimize the time you spend directly underneath chickens. This is the most dangerous place to be since most eggs travel straight down.
  9. Stay at the bottom of the screen, only moving up when absolutely necessary. This is a relatively safe area of the screen since chickens don't normally travel that far down (unless they're attacking you).
  10. Avoid lingering around the edges of the screen, on some waves chickens enter from there and you'll crash into them before you have a chance to react (although the game will generally try to warn you in these circumstances).
  11. Don't try to kill every single chicken in a wave if that means you have to get dangerously close. If a chicken has already gone past you, let it be. Don't risk being egged in the face at close range. You can pass through some waves without firing a single shot.
  12. If a bonus is dangerously close to a falling egg, consider leaving it alone. No bonus is worth a lost life. Still, note that bonuses and eggs often travel at different speeds, so in most cases the path to the bonus will clear up on its own if you are patient enough.
  13. Missiles take time to travel to the center of the screen. You can minimize the delay between firing a missile and its detonation if you move towards the center of the screen before firing it. The corners of the screen are the worst places to fire a missile.
  14. On some levels, all chickens arrive on the screen from the same spot. Use this to your advantage by 'camping' that spot and killing them one by one as they enter. Be ready to dodge incoming eggs, though.
  15. A highly-powered Ion Blaster is the best weapon to have on asteroid waves.
  16. The Vulcan Chaingun is the best weapon to have for Bonus Challenge waves.
  17. Don't fire continuously in asteroid waves, it will clutter your vision and make it more likely that you'll crash into an incoming asteroid. Instead, navigate your way through them and fire concentrated bursts to clear a path when things get too tight. Or, better still, use a missile.
  18. At the end of the game, you are awarded extra points for any remaining lives and missiles, so save them if at all possible for that special boost in your final score.
  19. In the "veteran" difficulty level, chickens are twice as tough, but you can also gain 3 times more points than "rookie".
  20. Similarly, on "Superstar Hero" the chickens are 3 times as tough, but you gain a whopping 9 times the score.
  21. Comet Chase: The comets start big and slow, and they get smaller and faster as the warp speed increases.
  22. Comet Chase: Move to the top of the screen. This will give you more time to react to (and avoid) incoming comets. This is particularly important during the later stages, when comets speed up.
  23. Comet Chase: Comet tails are harmless. You can fly over them as you weave between comets.
  24. Comet Chase: In rare circumstances, it's possible to be trapped by comets, with no way to escape. It helps to have saved a missile for these occasions. Stay near the center of the screen, because this way your missile will detonate almost instantly.
  25. The Lightning Frier generates little heat, so you can hold it down and spray the screen (although it's not very powerful when you use it in this way).
  26. By contrast, the Plasma Rifle is very powerful, but overheats quite quickly. It really pays to fire in short purposeful bursts when using this weapon.
  27. Your weapon will emit a short warning beep as it's about to overheat. If you react quickly, you'll be able to avoid overheating and its associated delay (during which you're powerless to do anything except launch missiles).

Cheat Codes

Important note: We strongly recommend you don't use the cheat keys unless you are absolutely stuck! Cheat keys can make things too easy and ruin the game's enjoyment.
For cheat keys to work, the relevant option must be turned on in the gameplay section of the options menu. If you use cheats during the game, any high scores achieved will not be accepted in the internet high score tables. Also, unlockables will not be given to you when you finish a cheated game. Consider yourself warned.
Cheat keys will only work if you're playing a solo or in-house multiplayer (LAN) mission. For LAN missions, only one of the players can invoke cheats (technically, the one that joined the game first, but practically it's easier to just try all of them). They will NOT work on internet multiplayer games.
To use cheats, press the corresponding keyboard key during normal play:
F5
Extra life (given to each of the players)
F6
Extra missile (given to each of the players)
F7
Weapon powerup
F8
Immediately skips current wave
On some recent keyboards, the F1-F12 keys are replaced by Windows functions like New/Open/Close etc. To enable the use of the F1-F12 keys, first press the "F Lock" key (or similar) near the top-right of your keyboard. Please consult your keyboard's manual if you have trouble getting this to work.
